About this tool
Compare digital storage sizes from bytes through larger units in decimal or binary mode. Decimal scaling uses powers of 1,000, so 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary scaling uses powers of 1,024, making the selected KB equivalent 1,024 bytes and a binary-style GB 1,073,741,824 bytes. A 5,000,000-byte file is 5 MB in decimal mode but about 4.77 MB under 1,024-based scaling. A marketed 1 TB drive contains 1,000 GB in decimal terms, while an operating system using binary interpretation may show a smaller numeric capacity. Use the converter for upload limits, disk purchases, backup planning, photo collections, data plans, and estimating whether files fit on removable media. Turn Binary mode on or off deliberately before comparing a value, then choose source and destination units. The interface’s labels remain familiar KB, MB, and GB even though strict IEC notation would call 1,024-based units KiB, MiB, and GiB. Converted numbers describe capacity, not transfer speed; download time also depends on bits per second, network overhead, and connection quality.
How to use
Set the "Binary mode" toggle first: on uses 1,024-based units, while off uses 1,000-based units.
